9 Technologies in Industry 4.0

Industry 4.0 is a promising approach based on the integration of the business and manufacturing processes, according to Angela Merkel on the World Economic Forum (WEF) four years ago. Professor Klaus Schwab, a German economist who coined the term Industry 4.0, also stated the same. He said that traditional thinking would not work anymore.

Germany is undeniably the country that successfully embraces and adopts the concept. One of its strategies is using technologies that enable data exchange and collection in real-time.

Boston Consulting Group has identified Industry 4.0’s nine technological pillars as follow: big data analytics, autonomous robots, simulation, and horizontal and vertical system integration, internet of things, cybersecurity, cloud, additive manufacturing, and augmented reality.

Big data analytics is the process of collecting, organizing and analyzing data to find out the patterns, including trends and other valuable information. Big data analytics can help organizations to understand the information contained within the data and would help identify the data that is most vital to the business. Then, it would be beneficial for the implementation of effective marketing to increase efficiency and improve customer’s best experience.

Autonomous robots are being utilized by many industries to carry out specific, complex tasks. As technology changes rapidly, robots are becoming more independent, flexible, and cooperative. In the future, robots interact with one another and also work side by side with humans.

3D Simulations will improve the effectiveness as it reduces the cost of spare part inventories, especially one that pricey. 3D simulation is also used to make prototypes of the new product design.

Horizontal and Vertical System Integration help the integration of the production process with better improvement. As universal data integration is evolving and enabling the automated value chains, the Industry 4.0 technology offers companies, departments, functions, and capabilities to become more cohesive.

Internet of Things (IoT) is a concept of leveraging the benefits of internet connectivity, allowing devices to interact and communicate with one another. The interrelated devices can share data and information, control remotely, and more.

Cyber-security is a technology designed to protect networks, computers, and data from hackers or unauthorized access. Along with the increase of connectivity in Industry 4.0, cybersecurity is crucial to protect digital-based information from the cyber-crime threat.

Cloud-computing is a data storage technology that utilizes virtual servers as storage media. It is a supporting infrastructure for other technologies in industry 4.0, such as big data analysis, internet of things, and artificial intelligence.

Additive Manufacturing can be used for prototyping and producing individual components. These additive-manufacturing methods will be widely used to produce small batches of customized products.

Augmented Reality (AR) includes certain information into the virtual world and displays it in the real world. A great example of AR technology is the Dulux’s application that allows its users to see Dulux paint colours their walls instantly simply by moving their smartphone or tablet around the room. Smart city a sexy tech concept for integrative cities

The era of IoT is coming and the world’s getting ready to embrace it. Let’s see how Indonesia, Singapore, and Japan implement Internet of Things and how the deployment affects the citizens daily life.

Since 2017, the Indonesian government has been introducing and promoting the “100 smart cities” initiative. The objective was to develop a hundred different regions in Indonesia where the Internet-of-things (IoT) appliances are deployed. From the civil registration to the field of health, education, jobs, and transportation. In 2014, the Jakarta Smart City was rolled out, followed by Sombere & Smart City in Makassar and smart kampung program in the City of Banyuwangi. These cities were even included in the ASEAN Smart Cities Network 2018, a forum held in Singapore.

Based on the data from the Indonesia IoT Forum, the Indonesian IoT market in 2022 will reach Rp444 trillion and Rp1,700 trillion by 2025. There will be around 400 active connected devices with the contribution of manufacturing sector 16%, health-care 15%, insurance 11%, 10% both for bank and securities, trade and retail 8%, and the rest for transportation and government services.

Singapore is a city-state with a total population of 5.6 million (Singstat, 2018). It is first Southeast Asia’s country that implemented smart city concept through what so-called “smart nation” initiative. The deployment of IoT in Singapore massively touches most of the public sectors and industries including health-care, logistics, and manufacturing.

Recently, Moment of Life (Families), a new government mobile application for families with the children aged 6 and below. The app provides useful services and information needed by parents and caregivers of young children on a single digital platform. The features include child-birth registration and immunisation schedule. The platform itself is integrated with other supporting facilities such as health institutions, civil registry, and more. Other than that, Singapore also applies smart traffic solution for urban transportation that saves up to 60 hours annually.

So it’s not surprising when the data from Analysys Mason mentioned that total IoT revenue in Singapore is projected to be S$714 million in 2025. Out of this, hardware and installation would account for S$270 million, connectivity and services S$95 million and applications S$349 million.

The deployment of IoT in Japan can be seen through Fujisawa Sustainable Smart Town. It comprises of 1000 households in Fujisawa city in Kanagawa prefecture, located approximately 50 km west of Tokyo. This residential development can reduce CO2 emissions by 70% when compared to 1990 levels and attain 30% of its energy needs from renewable sources.

Another example is waste management. In Japan, the subjects of waste treatment and waste management are becoming increasingly important. Thus, the government put more concerns on this issue. Japan implements a remote monitoring system. The sensors sense the amount of waste in the containers if it reached the maximum container capacity, sends instant messages to the trash management department which deploy them to collect the garbage in no time.

The Japan government took these steps as the efforts to improve the implementation of IoT in the country. According to the data form UDR (Universal Data Resources), Japan’s IoT market is expected to become USD112 Billion in 2022 as full-scale introduction progresses. Meanwhile, the IoT focused markets are telecommunication, platform, software development, server/cloud, and IoT devices. (PJ/Lbk)

Smart City, Konsep Seksi Perkotaan Integratif

Kehadiran IoT membuat semua negara berbenah.

(PJ/Lbk)

IoT in Indonesia, to be a King in its Realm

For eleven years dealing with and walking alone in IoT business, now IoT to become the next big.

The recent Asia IoT Business Platform exhibition held on August 28-29, 2018 left me a different impression as I felt a strong spirit and vibes spread out the air during the event this year. Imani Prima has participated in this event for four times, as the speaker and exhibitor in Jakarta and Taiwan.

Back to 7-10 years ago, when the term “Internet of Things” did not exist yet, we started the business and looking for the domestic partners to collaborate and develop the IoT implementation together, but rarely, even none that willing to get involved. It might be because providing the end-to-end solution means that you need limitless capability and expertise, from sensor and hardware, connectivity, platform, up to the application and analytic.

Therefore, we tried another option. We keep improving our technology from sensor integration, hardware development including PCB design and other electronic components and then moved to the connectivity. All alone.

From scratch, we have also been developing middleware platform to manage millions transaction per day by ourselves. It needs more efforts and consumes lots of energy to create three generation of the application within several years. Indeed, hard work would never betray you, it only pays. We finally reached the highest level in managing more than millions of data each day with lower hardware specification from laptops. Then, we successfully provided our users with not only the data but also the larger scale of data analytics which add more values to those collected data.

Get Ready to Welcome “The Next Big Thing”

Lastly, it is delighted to see how every party now more familiar with the Internet of Things. The domestic talents are increasingly growing and start to get involved in this emerging trend. The government already prepared the roadmap to promote the application of IoT and drive it to become the next big thing. Indonesia has a great opportunity and potential to adopt IoT, and our company has the same chance, too. We should be optimistic and convinced that we can be the king in our realm. Hopefully.

Gotthard Base Tunnel, Swiss Prestigious Icon

A great combination of the rocky Alp Mountain in Switzerland and the cutting-edge technology of European Rail Traffic Management System resulting in a mind-blowing work. There stand still, the sophisticated and magnificent Gotthard Base Tunnel.

Gotthard Base Tunnel (GBT) is the new icon in Switzerland. It was wholly operated two years ago on 11 December 2016 but opened six months prior that year. More than 260 freight trains and 64 passenger trains passed the longest tunnel in the world every day. The tunnel is ultimately linking Zurich in North Europe and Milan in South.

What is so exceptional about this tunnel? Just name it. There are numerous records can be found which stated that it is the riskiest, ambitious project in this era. The Swiss government spent about USD12 billion for the tunnel alone and 17 years in making. More than 2500 workers engaged in this 57 kilometers-length railway that is expected to reduce heavy congestion and exhaust emission in the country.

As a globe-famous-country for its stunning spots, Swiss government always concern on the tourism aspect, which is the answer why the longest railway would bring safety and splendid experience at once for its users.

End-to-End Safety System

The construction came with precise measurement. Located in 2.3 kilometers depth of the Alps, GBT equipped with ETCS (European Train Control System) level 2 which isdefinitely essential to monitor and track the movement of trains, speed, routes, and destination accurately. The system connected to Radio Block Center(RCB) all the time. Several years ago, European Commission (EU) had put the RTMS (European Rail Traffic Management System) as a mandatory standard for trains.

At first, The European Railway Traffic Management System (ERTMS) is a major industrial project developed by eight UNIFE members – Alstom Transport, Ansaldo STS, AZD Praha, Bombardier Transportation, CAF, Mermec, Siemens Mobility and Thales – in close cooperation with the European Union, railway stakeholders and the GSM-R industry.

To improve the train control system standard quality, ERTMS today become the UE standard for the high-speed trains (around 160km/h). Currently, Asia’s countries such as China, South Korea, India, and Saudi Arabia are adopting the ERTMS system and technology.

ERTMS has two primary components which are ETCS and GSM-R (Global System for Mobile communication-Railway). ETCS, the European Train Control System, is an automatic train protection system (ATP) to replace the existing national ATP-system while GSM-R, a radio system for providing voice and data communication between the track and the train, based on standard GSM using frequencies specifically reserved for rail application with certain specific and advanced functions.

Specifically, ETCS has three levels. ETCS Level 1 can be easily superimposed on the existing national signaling system and provides cab signaling. Movement authorities can be granted through fixed and switchable Eurobalises. They also send route data to the on-board unit. With the received data the maximum speed, as well as the breaking curves, are calculated at any time. Additionally to Eurobalises, it is possible to implement EuroLoop (loop infill) or a radio-based solution (radio infill) which continuously transmits data over a longer distance.

ETCS Level 2 is a radio-based system which displays signaling and movement authorities in the cab. The train is continuously sending data to the Radio Block Centre (RBC) to report its exact position and direction. Eurobalises are used as passive positioning beacons. Trains refine their position with additional sensors such as accelerometers, odometers or radar.

ETCS Level 3 is a fully radio-based system without any trackside equipment. The Radio Block Centre (RBC) receives positioning of each train continuously and calculates smallest possible train distances at any time. Therefore the track is no longer separated in fixed blocks but split into “moving blocks.” At the same time, it is vital that trains guarantee their integrity as there is no trackside equipment available to provide this information. ETCS L3 is currently still under standardization.

Safety facilities in Gotthard Base Tunnel are also awe-inspiring. Each station equipped with fire and chemical detectors; detect fire as soon as it starts and any leakage of hazardous goods, hot box and brake-locking detectors; detect overheating axle bearings and brakes which have got stuck, and 24 hours checkpoints

Claimed as en energy-saving railway tunnel, GBT that shove Seikan Tunnel in Japan away to the second place has its electrical energy from hydropower plants in Amsteg in the canton of Uri and Ritom in the township of Ticino is supplied to the substations via a low-loss system of transmission lines.

According to SBB (Schweizerische Bundesbahnen) which investigated about energy consumption in GBT, and ensured that the total energy consumption of the Gotthard baseline would be at least 10 percent lower than the energy consumption associated with the mountain route

The fast, anti-congestion freight train services and capacities (100 km/jam) also allow the energy consumption will be one third (33 percent) lower for the same volume of traffic. It was claimed that “flat rail” that make the need for mechanical braking system decreased. It is also affecting the reduction of air pollution which is the global issue right now, and the solution for it is spreading around.

So, Switzerland can bask in the moment of glory by having the modern Gotthard Base Tunnel entirely done because it is a transportation mode that maximizes the natural resources in the country. For information, nearly 30 million tonnes of rocks were carved out from the Alps and then used for developing Uri Lake and Las Clause in Sedrun.

The question arises, when will Indonesia can build an alluring, sophisticated tunnel like this?

Smart City Trends in Southeast Asia

IoT trends continue to grow. It is not only about modernism but also how its capability to accommodate all life sectors to become more straightforward and beneficial.

Connectivity is an integral part of IoT goal. In communication, this technology allows people in remote areas to always connected to each other. In business side, for instances, it ensures a precise, timely, and rigid logistics and transportation services, as well as the congestion problems. As a result, it can be an opportunity to build a government to government partnership.

Today, ASEAN members are vibrantly developing smart city concept, for example, Singapore with its Smart Nation program, Ho Chi Min City in Vietnam, Iskandar Malaysia Smart City in Malaysia, Clark Global City in the Philippines, and Makassar Smart City in Indonesia.

An Easy Solution

Commonly, an issue of each country’s big cities is relating to citizenship and living environment in which specific issues like housing, job, taxation, insurance, education, health, even food consumption and crime are possible to occur. In associating with living environment, cases such as waste management, flood, and protection from more severe disasters like tsunami and earthquake are also unseparated parts of smart city concept. The cutting-edge technology is considered can assist the city government to solve those problems through its accumulative tracking data system in whole including its solutions.

two sets of systems for residents in the Yuhua neighborhood in the city’s west – elderly monitoring and utility management.

In 2016, Singapore implemented two sets of the system for residents in Yuhua neighborhood for elderly monitoring and utility management. The first monitoring system tracks the elderly movements in one house via sensors connected to the smart-phone so the relatives or the caregivers would be able to monitor the safety and the needs of the elder. The second system is designed to control the electricity usage and daily needs such as one that is applied in the refrigerator which can notify the user that the beverages had run out through their handphone. This system also equipped with the panic button for the emergency situation both indoor or outdoor.

Thailand also implemented the IoT technology to connect train station to the waterways dock to decline heavy congestion in Bangkok. It aimed to use the channel and rivers in the country as a user-friendly transportation mode.

In a like manner, smart city concept focus on how to improve the security by increasing the functions and supporting infrastructures such as CCTV, alarm, and street lamps instead of the security personnel addition.

The smart city is an integrative concept to create a smooth, well-organized, efficient living by applying high technology to assist the government in taking action to the trends in the area that relates to the population growth, business, and logistics. Smart city projects in ASEAN keep increasing as the demand for accessible public services in all sectors. The smart city concept which is pushing ahead in ASEAN regions aims to face the ASEAN Economy Community (AEC) as well.

Sovereignty, the Absolute Condition

Innovation is the critical answer for country’s advancement. When a nation focuses and opens to this term, it will bear fruit which so-called sovereignty.

One of the barometers for country’s advancement is the availability of accessible public services including the now-most-needed thing in the world, technology. Thus, the key to open sovereignty is the innovation for sure.

Sovereignty is about how a country is maximizing and optimizing all the existing resources. Therefore, the correlation between Internet of Things (IoT) and country’s advancement gives impact to the sovereignty of the country itself. It was the point of COO of PT Imani Prima, Yuli Cahyono presentation in “Indonesianisme Summit 2017” several times ago.

Yuli Cahyono highlighted Indonesia’s national goal “to bring forward the citizens’ welfare” and how it connects to IoT. In this case, the national industry can be reached by using IoT technology which directly creates the open source mechanism. The mechanism provides a large number of chances because it is free and always on stream as well as opening the gate to explore the opportunity and enabling the learning approach.

Open source, as it stated at, refers to something people can modify and share because its design is publicly accessible by using source-code. The way how this technology is developed and utilized would bring positive impacts for the sovereignty of the country. PT Imani Prima that has been involving in IoT for more than ten years seen the opportunity to give the contribution to providing this kind of technological advancement. PT Imani Prima has contributed in a lot of innovative projects both for system and monitoring & tracking device; which many big companies and State-owned Enterprises (BUMN) such as PT Patria Maritime Lines, PT Kereta Api Indonesia (PT KAI), and PT Pelindo III had implemented.

Both products and services of PT Imani Prima also built upon the awareness to support the government vision to make Indonesia as the world’s maritime axis. It can be seen through VTS (Vessel Tracking System) and VMS (Vessel Monitoring System) that the company developed and equipped with the most sophisticated application that can monitor and track vessel position and its activities precisely.

The government expected to provide research funding for applicative technology not only for the institution but also the private party who want to develop the technology. On other hands, infrastructure availability is also crucial to driving the actualization of governmental policies in every sector including technology.

Ketika Kemandirian Menjadi Syarat Mutlak

Inovasi menjadi kunci kemajuan sebuah bangsa.
